He broke the Guinness World Record for static apnea with oxygen assistance on April 30, 2008. He performed this on The Oprah Winfrey Show by holding his breath for 17 minutes and 4 seconds. He was born in Brooklyn and his family background has multiple cultures because his father William Perez was of half Puerto Rican and half Italian descent and his mother was of Russian Jewish heritage and a school teacher.
